Pigeon guano: the health risks and how it's safely removed

A few droppings on a ledge are a nuisance. A build-up in a roof void, plant room or loading bay is a health and safety issue. This guide explains why, and what safe removal involves.

Why build-ups are a problem

Accumulated droppings can harbour bacteria and fungal spores. The main risk comes when dried guano is disturbed and becomes airborne, for example by sweeping, during maintenance or by air movement in plant rooms. Guano is also acidic, so over time it can damage stonework, metal and roofing materials.

Slip and access hazards

Wet droppings on walkways, stairs, loading bays and roof access routes are a slip hazard for staff and contractors. Nesting material can also block gutters and drainage, leading to water damage.

Who is responsible

On commercial premises, employers and those in control of buildings have health and safety duties to manage risks to staff, contractors and visitors. That includes making sure maintenance staff aren't sent into heavily fouled areas without proper controls, and arranging safe removal.

Don't sweep it up dry

Dry sweeping is the quickest way to put dust into the air. Areas should be closed off and treated as contaminated until they've been cleaned by people with suitable respiratory protection, PPE and methods that keep dust down.

What safe removal involves

A risk assessment plans access, including any work at height, and confines the work area. Guano is dampened to suppress dust, removed with nests and carcasses, bagged and disposed of correctly. Surfaces are then disinfected, and the area left safe for access.

Stop it coming back

Without proofing, birds usually return to the same spot. Netting, spikes, wire systems and sealing entry points into roof voids and plant rooms are the long-term fix, ideally fitted straight after the clean.

Quick answers

Can our caretaker clean up pigeon droppings?

Small amounts on open surfaces can be cleaned by trained staff with suitable PPE and wet methods. Large build-ups, enclosed spaces and work at height should be handled by a specialist.

Do you need to close the building?

Usually not. The affected area is isolated while work is carried out, and we can work out of hours to avoid disruption.
